1. Train trip from Hanoi to Hue

Arrived Hue around 9.00am after a fourteen hour overnight train trip from Hanoi. What was the trip like did you say?. Damn terrible !!!!!!!!!

Train Hanoi – Hue

The train tracks in Vietnam are narrow gauge and I believe the rolling stock are wide carriages. So, they rock and roll from side to side. The tracks are about as rough as my driveway so you are thrown all over the place for fourteen hours. we had the lower two berths in a four berth “soft” sleeper compartment. SOFT !!!!!!! I am sure prison beds are softer. When you lay down the sideways rocking of the train literally makes your stomach (and any other flabby parts of your body) move up and down very quickly forcing the emptying thereof. Mrs Wombat was “Seasick” and sat up most of the night. Willie Wombat curled up in a foetal position and got about two hours sleep. The two young Americans in the top bunks seemed to be immune and said they slept well. We think the top bunks were not so susceptible.

We found a “Western” toilet (one you sit on as opposed to a squat hole in the floor) which was a huge relief as the “bug” from Hanoi was still lingering. However the train was so rough that when you sat on the loo the water in the cistern behind you splashed from side to side and splashed  out all over your back.

One thing about Vietnam trains is for sure. They put no respect on passenger comfort…… just get on, sit down, suffer and we will get you there!

Rail stop near Hue

Anyway we arrived at Hue, jumped in a cab and reached the Hanh Dat Hotel ten minutes later. What a pleasant surprise. Two beautiful young ladies dressed in Vietnamese Ai Dais ran out to greet us, grabbed our bags (heavy) and took us in where a third had a cold fresh orange juice ready. Sat us down said “just relax and we will tell you all about Hue, what to see, what to do and where to eat”. Then helped us up to our room on the forth floor (elevator thank goodness) and settled us into a beautifully clean room with a king size bed, free water and fruit, A/C, WiFi, mini bar, TV, jug and a large bathroom with a shower and BATH!! All this for just 439,667 VND or $22.15 a night !!!!!  Plus a free buffet breakfast.
