The power station, three miles from Moorina was built in1907 and is the oldest working hydro power station in Australia. It is a testimony to the forsight of the Pioneer Tin Mine company and utilises the water from the Frome Dam.
Moorina is one of the oldest mining towns and was once more important than Derby, being the distributer and transport centre for goods coming and going from Weldborough, Goulds Country, through to Boobyalla Port. Moorina was the name of ‘Truganini’s’ sister.
The power station which once kept the town going is now “mothballed” but is still intact and if you can find a guide in town is well worth a visit.
