Hong Kong / Macau

There are lots of things we wanted to do in Hong Kong even though we only had seven days there. We wanted to eat Dim Sum (lots), visit the Jade Market, go up to The Peak, take a ride on the NP 360 cable car and have a meal at Lei Yue Mun fishing village where we visited previously twenty two years ago. There you pick your live seafood from the tanks and it is cooked for you in the adjoining restaurants.

Wombats comments on Hong Kong.

1 = bad 10 =good

Based on a stay at Sha Tin Riverside Regal Hotel:

  • Accommodation where we stayed: 10 out of 10

  • Ease of using local transport 10 out of 10

  • Atmosphere of Hong Kong: 9 out of 10

  • General cleanliness: 9 out of 10

  • Locals friendliness: 10 out of 10

  • Ability to communicate: 9 out of 10 (Easy)

  • Foods varieties: 10 out of 10

  • Restaurants and eateries: 10 out of 10

Comments: A fantastic modern city. Getting around is simple using Bus and Metro, (we never used a taxi once) Food is everywhere ranging from hawker stalls to high class restaurants and around Sha Tin where we stayed there was a large array of “local” restaurants and eateries only metres away at the rear of our hotel.

Shopping has everything from  malls to a myriad of markets and night bazaars. Lots to see and do. A tad expensive and a week can damage your budget. Overall: We would love to return.

1 = bad 10 =good.

Based on a day trip.

  • Ease of using local transport 6 out of 10

  • Atmosphere of Macau: 4 out of 10

  • General cleanliness: 4 out of 10

  • Locals friendliness: 6 out of 10

  • Ability to communicate: 7 out of 10

  • Foods varieties: 7 out of 10

  • Restaurants and eateries: Unable to rate as only there a few hours

Comments: Very disappointing as the historic section was packed and overrun by mainly Chinese tourists making photography almost impossible. Houses in side streets were shabby and unkempt and advertising everywhere. This is a good place to come if your main interest is Casinos as they have taken over the island. Overall: We would not return.
